I got back to the hostel and chatted with my roommates for a bit and then went in search of dinner. I was headed back to Golden Balls but came across a seafood restaurant with seating outside and picked my spot.
The woman next to me had said something to the couple on the other side of me in English so after I ordered I started up a conversation with her. She was originally from Sweden and moved to the US for a long while. She has no accent when speaking English because she was an adolescent when she learned English. She went to Colombia and then was talked into going to Italy for medical school. She was lucky the textbooks were in English and finished her degree. She met her husband there and is now living in Parna, Italy. She said she misses NY and many things, like the food. Here there is a very small selection of food. She misses the food in the US but not really the American food. I mean she craves a good burger every now and again but things like sushi really get her. She said the sushi is very expensive and bad so she has given up on that.
She was in Florence for a conference and she said it is killing her. It is very technical and about things that she will never use. She cannot just bail as they give her a test at the end of the conference to make sure she was there and learned information. She said that the weather is amazing and she hates being couped up in a room with no windows for days.
She is staying at one of the best hotels in Florence, by the train station. She said that on the top floor there is a very expensive restaurant with a panoramic view of Florence. I was going to get a drink or something from the bar but do not feel I have appropriate clothes. Maybe next time...
