St. Sulpice

The ride takes about an hour and I can tell that we are leaving the city. The houses are gaining a country feel and many have gardens in the back. I begin to pass fields of sunflowers (most of which are completely dried up and dead) and corn. I find one field of live sunflowers and try to snap a photo. I feel unsuccessfully, but you be the judge.

I arrive and take out my information on the “farm.” It is a boyfriend and girlfriend, who are in their twenties, trying to live as sustainably as possible. I have their address, was I supposed to find their home? Before I get too into looking for the street, Christian comes up and greets me. He is impressed by the small amount of luggage I have and we are off (please note: there is no bicycle). He started to talk in French and then English. I understood very little of what he said in French, I think I heard him say “you” at one point. After a two minute walk, we arrive at his home.

They just arrived back from vacation; Christian was in Paris and Fanny was in Barcelona, and they are cleaning up a bit. Christian is originally from Toronto and moved to Toulouse and now St. Sulpice. He met Fanny during a foreign exchange program in England.

While Fanny is vacuuming, Christian shows me around. The garden is being made on built up plots since the soil is like clay (how NJ). They have lots of tomatoes, some zucchini, cucumber, corn, artichoke, carrots, figs, and that is all that I remember. They have two chickens and a pool.

They just had a well put in and Fanny would like to decorate it with stones. We are going to go to the mill and collect some more stones later today. They also have some land across the way that they want to garden, but it is hard not having a water source and being farther away from it.

I am the only WWOOFer here right now, which means I will be able to practice my French without everyone else speaking English. I do not understand it at all right now, though so we shall see how long it lasts. Christian said something to me and I did not understand and then he said it in English and I was like, oh yea I totally knew that is what he said.

They have internet here, but my computer will not let me connect. Christian keeps coming up with new ideas for how to make it work, but we have been unsuccessful as of yet. In the meantime, I will use their computer to send email and post some blogs. Also, those of you that are dying to hear my voice, this might be the chance you get. There does not seem to be any type of phone store here, but I will continue to look.
